American Slavery Book ReviewThis book achieved its goal by reflecting the past and history of American slavery. We can see in great detail what America was and became during the era of slavery. It was during the colonial era that America began to see what true slavery would soon become. The author, Peter Kolchin, tried to interpret the true history of slavery. He wants readers to understand the extent to which slaves lived in bondage. In the book he describes the history of the colonial era and how slavery began. It shows us how the 18th century progressed and how American slavery developed. Then we move on to the American Revolution and how American slaves were born into a class. It was during this period that the slave population was more than double that before. The Revolutionary War had a major impact on slavery and slaves. The author goes on to describe antebellum slavery. During this period he describes slavery as a massive expansion. He expresses this knowledge through slave numbers and damning facts. At that time, cotton boosted the economy of all slave states, cotton producers or not. Cotton created an intense demand for slave labor and thus slave prices rose to all-time highs. The slave trade was very traumatic for slaves, being separated from the only thing they knew. Some lived on plantations under a watchful eye and others worked right alongside their owners. Slaves on large plantations usually worked in gangs, and there were better locations to work than others. Some gangs were separated into lighter working groups, made up of men and women. Other gangs were not so lucky and were assigned to hard labor. The author underlined ... half of the paper ...... y. It touched on parts of the lives of slaves and what they actually experienced, but I don't think we even have a real idea of what it would have been like in their shoes. The author presented the information very solidly and broke it down very well. I easily understood what he was trying to explain. It was a bit of a long book but very full of knowledge and history which in spirit is still alive today. We may no longer have slavery like we did then, but we still deal with racism and prejudice on a daily basis. The world changed because of slavery and is the way it is because of America's history. We cannot change the past but we can change the future. Thank God the world is no longer the same as before. I can't imagine what painful lives the slaves had to endure. But we can learn more about the history of slavery and America and learn from it in many different ways.
