The Reflecting Pool The next morning the girls woke up at 8:00 when Kimberly shouted upstairs, “Girls wake up! Will you sleep all day?" Lucinda was half awake anyway and shouted to her mother: "Okay mom! I'm awake!" Frances opened one eye and said, "Huh?" "I think we should get up and meet for the day," Lucinda said. Frances and Lucinda went downstairs to find Jackie in the kitchen making French toast. "Hi Jackie, " said Frances. "Did you have fun last night with Jim?" "Yes, we went to a movie," said Jackie. "What did you two do?" "Not much," said Lucinda. "I visited Ambur and Honeysuckle a couple of days ago and they're doing well with little Tulip." "Okay," said Jackie. "Do you want some French toast?" After breakfast Frances told Lucinda she had to go home. Lucinda told her she was going to visit Ambur and would let him know what they had done. "I'll take what we found too and let you know what he says," Lucinda said. It wasn't long before Lucinda cleaned up her rocks and put them in a bag. Then she jumped with her hiking boots and started down the path to Ambur's house. The only thing left was the shiny rock that Lucinda found just before leaving the cave. On the path from the cave was Frances' scarf. Lucinda moved her to a different branch, further away, and tied her again. Then she continued along the path to the other place where they had first left her pocket knife and cut the glow stick from the tree branch. He looked around and chose several landmarks so he could find his way back to the cave. Or at least, maybe later... halfway through the paper. ....quick look...he heard a "plunk" and looked over to see a small section of rocks bending and moving like ripples in a pond...a pond! In the corner there was a small pond with the water so clear and still everything was reflected in it. You couldn't even tell it was there if you didn't know it. And a drop of water betrayed him. Lucinda wanted to leave and so she never told Ambur about it. There would be more visits to the cave, he imagined. They left the cave (with the gold nugget and a glowing rock for Honeysuckle) and headed home. As they walked Ambur asked, "Luce, have you told your mother and father about your gift yet?" I didn't say it. No, I haven't done it yet. I don't know how to talk about it," Lucinda said. "There's no easy way to break the news, Luce. You just have to come out and say it you should probably do it tonight and let it go."
