Robert Heinlein is often considered one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. His most popular book; A stranger in a strange land; created a cultural counter-revolution. Which has led to many cults built around its fictional culture that defies every axiom of society. *Please note that this book was written in the 1960s, when "free love" was widely accepted by younger generations. It probably influenced the "free love" movement and the "sexual revolution" in general. Valentine Michael Smith (aka the Man from Mars) is the heir to a considerable fortune from his mother, his father and his real father, as well as the vast fortunes of every member of the crew who was on the first expedition to Mars. In accordance with the Larkin Decision, Mike is the sovereign ruler of Mars, having remained on Mars his allotted years. Jill compares Mike to an angel. “He had old, wise eyes in a completely placid face, a face of otherworldly innocence.” He's a kid in the woods, so to speak. So far he doesn't understand the concept of religious lying. He reads many sacred books and realizes that religions are inconsistent. When he was brought to Earth he had never seen a woman. Doctors kept him isolated from women for fear of a woman being raped. Jill, a nurse, crept into Mike's room out of great curiosity. When he converses with Mike he realizes that he has never seen a woman before. There Mike creates his first water brother. A water brother is someone you pledge your life to and in a way it is a form of love. "Well? I look like a woman, don't I?" "I don't know," Smith replied slowly. "What does a woman look like? What makes you a woman?" Well, for heaven's sake!" "You don't expect me to take my clothes off and show them to you!" Mike carries this trait of innocence throughout the book. Gillian (Jill) Boardman is Mike's first aquatic sibling .She sees that Mike is in danger and takes him to Ben Caxton's apartment. There Mike and she are almost caught by the police. Here the book shows Mike's special "skills" who thinks that Mike is superfluous or kept in the hospital for a lifetime. He and Jill conspire to lead Mike to the safety of Jubal Harshaw (Heilein's alter ego), an eccentric billionaire who has the resources to stop the Federation from catching up to him.
