In Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner, mistakes and their confrontation are an important theme. The Kite Runner takes us on the journey of immigrant life through the eyes of refugee Amir. It is through the mistakes of Amir, his family and his friends that the novel develops. The most significant and central mistake in the novel is that Amir does not defend Hassan while he is being raped. While this mistake is the most significant and central, I will also look at two others; Baba cheats with Ali and Soraya's wife and his previous marriage. To address our mistakes we can try to "redeem ourselves" by doing good that we believe can compensate for this mistake or even simply by bringing this mistake into the open and talking about it. The Kite Runner shows that people who "bottle" their secrets as the characters seem to be "haunted" by their past until they face their mistakes. As stated earlier, the central mistake is Amir not coming to Hassan's aid while Assef was raping him. Amir never told anyone what had happened and therefore never faced his mistake...
