Victor Marie Hugo was a French poet, author and playwright and was part of the Romantic movement. He is one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France, his fame came first from his poetry, but later his novels and plays also made him famous. Among his many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles are some of his most famous. Outside France, he is best known for the novels Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris. Although he was a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as he aged and he became a supporter of republicanism. Many of his works mention the political and social circumstances of his time. He was buried in the Panthéon on 1 June 1885. Victor was the third son of Joseph Léopold Sigisbert Hugo and Sophie Trébuchet and had two brothers. His parents strongly disagreed about religion and politics. He was born in 1802 in Besançon.
