Gregor was alienated long before his metamorphosis into a cockroach. His obsession with work had dehumanized him, made him less personal and more mechanical. During business trips, he began locking hotel doors at night. He carried this action back into his native life. His family no longer knew him, partly because they took it for granted that he earned money for them and partly because that was simply the way he wanted to be. Gregor's metamorphosis into a cockroach only allowed his family and himself to consciously alienate him from society and the world. As someone told me, I don't remember who it was, it's really extraordinary that when you wake up in the morning you almost always find everything exactly in order. same place as the night before. Because when you sleep and dream you find yourself, at least apparently, in an essentially different state from that of waking life; and therefore, as that man rightly said, it takes a great deal of presence of mind, or rather quickness of mind, when you open your eyes to grasp, as it were, everything in the room at exactly the same point where you let it go the evening before. That's why, he said, the moment of awakening was the riskiest moment in life. Once all this is over, without deviating from your orbit, you may enjoy the heart of grace for the rest of the day. Gregor woke up one morning to find himself transformed from a human into a cockroach. People found this extremely difficult to understand. Many thought that Gregor should have been more shocked by this change, or at least less sympathetic towards it. But really, why would he? The only aspect of being a cockroach that seemed to truly shock Gregor was that he could no longer do his job in the office. Gregor's family life has not changed drastically. The loss of relationships with his family was nothing new, he had already lacked the personal connection with his parents for some time. His parents treated him as a form of paid help since he took the job to pay for his own
