Topic > The Altruistic Gregor in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

Gregor was the most altruistic person in The Metamorphosis. This characteristic manifests itself in his dedication to his work. He was the only family member with a job, believing he was the only one capable of doing so. Sacrificing his social life for work, he had no friends at work and never went out at night. His only hobby was fretwork, sitting alone in his room. The only person he had intimacy with was his sister Grete. His devotion to his work was remarkable. In all the five years he had worked for his father's creditor, he had never been absent. Always ready to go out for his rounds as soon as possible, he never took advantage of the time for a break. When he returned, the other employees were still having breakfast. Convinced that he was the family's sole breadwinner, Gregor took a job with his father's creditor, before even consulting his family. At the time, of course, they were impressed. The apartment in which they lived was chosen by Gregor. Earning enough money, he hired a cook and a servant. He was even thinking of sending Grete to the conservatory to further develop what he believed were musical talents. Even after his metamorphosis, he never asked for much. Showing his concern for the well-being of others, he hid under the sofa so as not to disgust anyone with his sight. Even though they brought him food every day, he ate almost none of it. He even wished he wasn't a burden on his family and could turn back into his old self. All of the above-mentioned actions demonstrate Gregor's selflessness. After his metamorphosis, no one expressed gratitude for what he had done. After his first absence, the prosecutor himself showed up at Gregor's house to see what had happened. When Gregor did not open the door for him, the prosecutor accused him of stealing the company's funds and denigrated him in front of his parents as an insubordinate. After the transformation, Gregor's father gave him little to no love or support. Instead, he had hurt Gregor many times while carrying him back to the room. Grete and her mother show some support for a time. However, after having Gregor for a while, Grete states that they should get rid of him somehow.
