Topic > The Human Compensation of an Illiterate Society by Jonathan Kozol

The most obvious type of repetition in his essay is found in paragraphs 16 through 24. In each of these paragraphs both the first sentence and the first sentence include the word " illiterate." Through Kozol's use of repetition, the word "illiterate" is used more than once and allows us to appreciate how deprived non-readers really are. These humans are no longer in control of their lives or actions and are considered incapable of changing direction. Kozol wants them to be seen as victims of society and as literate individuals. Also, to bear the dangers that illiterates face in the new society. Kozol repeats “illiterates can't” to highlight the barriers illiterates must avoid to live a typical American life. Kozol also has numerous “illiterates don't” and “illiterates rely” to further highlight the lack of freedom and dependence on the sincere beliefs and intentions of other human beings. Through the repetition of the phrase Illiteracy, the reader can appreciate the pain and difficulties that illiterate individuals would face. The sentence becomes more solid with each individual point within the essay. For example, in paragraph 10 “Illiterates cannot learn the directions on the bottle of prescription medicines” this is the main serious problem that illiterates face because they are also allergic to some drugs and may be able to change their style of life.
