This essay explores further changes that may occur in the future as debates about same-sex marriage increasingly influence both family law and convivial conceptions of marriage. Marriage as an institution has undergone a dramatic transformation due to the cumulative effects of the last half-century of de-gendering family law. Same-sex marriage and, perhaps even more so, the highly visible cultural debate about it is contributing to this process. There are also reasons why same-sex marriage is good for our economy and society. Very few people know this, but sanctioning same-sex unions would have a huge financial impact on both private and open divisions.
