Topic > Our Fear of Death - 771

“No one knows whether death is truly the greatest blessing a man can have, but they fear it is the greatest curse, as if they knew it well.” -Plato. This quote emphasizes that death is a natural part of life that everyone will have to deal with, and for the most part, it is a very uncomfortable topic that most try to avoid. But why do we all try to avoid the topic of death? I don't think we fear death itself, we fear what will happen after death. Death has been one of the most debated issues for thousands of years due to the fact that individuals have different points of view depending on their religion or simply personal belief. For most people, the fact that there is life after death is exclusively religious. The views of Christianity, Buddhism, and atheism, for example, all differ on life after death. Death has been studied for thousands of years but we have yet to come to a definitive conclusion. Christian's teachings come exclusively from the Holy Bible and their view of Heaven and Hell. Death is recognized as the death of your earthly body, but your soul continuing to live and perhaps going to Heaven. They believe that if you have lived a Godly life and truly repented of your sins, you will gain entry into Heaven. According to God's judgment, your soul will enter Heaven or Hell. Many scientists have tried to explain these paranormal places and they can be viewed from two perspectives. Traditionally, Heaven and Hell have been seen as concrete places, whereas they have usually been described as Heaven; to be close to God and Hell; being very far from God. When asked to describe Heaven, people often say that it is a place with angels, harps and white horses. On the other hand, when asked to describe Hell, most would say it is a fiery red place with d... in the center of the card... combined with air, consequently recycled into a new organism. Death is the only aspect. of the life that every human being will have to face. Most people fear death and think of it as a bad thing, but it's just natural. Some may see death as a blessing, a curse, or a new beginning. Some religions believe in a harmonious or terrible place after death; Heaven and Hell. Others teach the cycle of reincarnation in which souls are continually reborn until perfect nirvana is achieved. Although all religions differ in their views after death, the main goal is the same; live a good life. Whether living a good life takes you to heaven or one of the six realms, the individual's goal is to live a life that will take him to a virtuous place after death. I believe people fear death not because of pain or suffering, but because they are unaware of what will happen next.
