When the couple is faced with the decision to keep the baby, they avoid the elephant in the room. They do this by just talking about what beer they want and what the surrounding hills and terrain are like. For example, they have a conversation stating, “The beer is nice and cold, said the man. It's lovely, said the girl” (Hemingway 312). Soon they finally talk about the elephant in the room, but all of what the man wants to talk about is having an abortion, but she is willing to be a parent. She knows he doesn't want to be a parent, so when the man tries to talk to her about having an abortion she wants to avoid it altogether by stating, "Would you please? "Please, please, please, please, please, please, stop talking?" (Hemingway 314). Likewise, in today's society, it is looked down upon to have a child outside of marriage because there it is instability and tension on the part of both parents. As a result, no one wants to talk about the pregnancy because it often brings with it a lot of regrets and confusion.
