Regionalism emphasizes the local characteristics of a region, whether good or bad. A regional writer is someone who writes what they believe is being universally abused across a person or place and should be corrected. Regionalism usually results in criticism of a person, place, or country through literary techniques, such as symbolism, satire, and conflict. Mark Twain is known to some as a regional writer due to the geographic region he uses which exemplifies the country as a whole. Mark Twain's novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, falls into the category of regionalism because of its universal themes of slavery, morality, and society. Huck Finn was set in the Old South near the Mississippi River, where slavery was still in effect. Whites treated African Americans badly by insulting them, giving them poor living conditions and lack of freedom. Slavery and racism fall into the category of regionalism because it was not only adamant in the “slave” states of the South, but also in the “free” states of the North. An example might be: "Here's a government that calls itself a government, and pretends to be a government, and thinks it's a government, and yet it has to sit still for a whole six months before it can catch a vagrant." , thief, hellish, free nigger in white shirt” (Twain 21). Huck's father criticizes the government because an intelligent, well-dressed African American had the same freedoms as him. Another example, from Jim's point of view is "Ole Missus [Miss Watson] teases me all the time, and treats me bad, but he said he wouldn't sell me to Orleans... but he might get eight hundred" d dollars for me…he couldn't resist'” (33). From a slave's point of view, he is stating that his owner had...... middle of paper......m as a theme because he knew that everyone deserved it and it would save a lot of trouble and lives. Inclusively, “Jim said that being so close to freedom made him all trembling and feverish” (66). Twain's idea was that society could never be civilized unless it took control of its actions and granted equal liberties to all. Huck Finn will always be characterized as a Bildungsroman in the literary canon. This is done through the topics presented and how Huck matures through those topics. Twain expressed his ideas of a civilized society which are considered universal in the novel. He believed that society should abolish slavery, acquire morality, and become more civilized. Twain uses regionalism to criticize an implication using a person, place, or time. Twain is known as a regional writer, or “universal writer” for his views on captivity, princes, and humanity.
