Things and people are not always as they appear at first sight, that's why we have to examine them in different ways otherwise they might deceive us. This is more than true in the story "The Kiss" by Kate Chopin where she uses imagery, irony and similes to show us how deceptive a person can be. Through the actions of his characters he tells us that a person should not be judged solely by his appearance or his words because these things can be dangerously misleading. All the characters in Chopin's story play their own games and in a more or less visible way try to manipulate others to achieve their goals which are sometimes not very right, but which in the end will succeed in realizing his desires in this world of deception and manipulation.First and most visible protagonist of the story is Miss Nathalie, who is introduced to us by Chopin when she sits in her home on a chair by the light of the fire and caresses “the satin coat of the cat that lay curled up in her lap.” This is a very effective simile because through it we begin to see what kind of person he is. And Miss Nathalie is an intelligent, cunning and shrewd woman who knows very well how and when to act or pretend and even more so when to use her charm to get everything she wants and that is the love of the handsome but not the rich Mr. Harvey with whom she secretly meets and the money of the unattractive but "enormously rich" Mr. Brantain whom she wants to marry. We see her acting skills and charm in use when, after an unfortunate incident in which Mr. Harvey kisses her in the presence of Mr. Brantain, she is reminded of the story of the kiss that is just an innocent intimacy between brother and sister , which to his great delight Brantain seems to believe without any question....... middle of paper...... sent me here to kiss you.” From what we learn that he has already spoken to Harvey about that intimacy between brother and sister and the kiss he requested is not a tolerance of the relationship between Harvey and Nathalie, but is a sign of awareness and a silent and subtle request to end it . in the end we see that everyone in the story uses some form of manipulation, obvious and not always working, like Miss Nathalie who thought she was controlling everyone but was unable to see that she is the one being manipulated, emotional and quick someone like Mr Harvey who tries to force the woman he loves to make a decision and has to live with her choice or finally a subtle and calculating one like Mr. Brantain who waits, observes and acts when the situation requires it and thus gets everything he wanted white people to do they also realized that they were being manipulated.
