Introduction College students lead very busy and stressful lives, which impacts all aspects of their health. One of the biggest risks of a hectic routine is bad eating habits. Many students commonly consume junk food during study sessions or fast food during a night out with friends. Additionally, many students have reduced impulse control and will choose to eat foods high in fat, salt, carbohydrates, and sugar. It is critical that students understand the importance of their choices and ways to make better decisions when it comes to meals and snacks. The purpose of this report is to educate readers about the factors that lead to poor eating habits and share some concepts of healthier eating. This report is divided into the following sections: Introduction, Student Stress and Choices, Schedule and Lifestyle Factors in Eating Habits, Ways to Change Eating Habits, Conclusions, Recommendations, References and Appendices, and Summary. Student Stress and Choices Many college students face high levels of stress every day due to a hectic schedule of homework, family life, and work. According to nutrition specialist Ruth Blackburn, students can develop poor eating habits for numerous reasons. “Time constraints make eating a well-balanced meal seem impossible. Lack of sleep and stress can fuel cravings for foods high in sugar and/or fat.” (as cited in Woll, 2002).
