The nature of relationships between family members is consistently related to delinquency, regardless of how delinquency is measured. Single parents, especially mothers, are likely to have more difficulty providing financial resources and supervision for their children than two-parent families. However, how a parent handles divorce or the loss of another parent appears to be more critical to children's behavioral patterns than the absence of one or both parents. How parents and children get along and the general harmony within the family are more important in explaining delinquency than whether the home is intact or destroyed. If there are conflicts, however, they can lead to negative social interactions within the family and ultimately lead to a future in the family
