Martin Luther King believed that civil rights were human rights and states rights that had been taken away from African Americans and that they needed to stand up and take them back. In his speech on the birth of a new nation he said: “The oppressor never voluntarily gives freedom to the oppressed. We must work for this" (MK, 29). He believed that you had to regain those rights not by stooping to the level of the oppressor but by being the bigger person and acting with non-violence. He talked about the country of Ghana and how that country inspired him because they didn't act violently and were still able to take their country back. He shared with the Detroit crowd, “Freedom comes only through persistent revolt, through persistent agitation, through persistent revolt against the system of evil” (MK, 30).
