He seemed to always be seeking Eric's approval in every sense of the word. Dylan would try to outdo Eric in many ways to earn Eric's approval. Dylan seemed to constantly look towards Eric in hopes of some kind of reinforcement. To me, this is Dylan trying to form an attachment that he felt he would miss his entire life as a shy, easily embarrassed boy. Unfortunately, Dylan lacked the insight to understand that even at that moment, when he felt an attachment to another person, he still felt a sense of insecurity, always seeking Eric's approval. I see a boy who has developed another insecure attachment with another unhealthy and deviant personality like him. Through yet another unhealthy, insecure attachment and lack of healthy attachment from their family, they began to isolate themselves and reinforce their worldviews over each other. In a way it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Both saw themselves as isolated and part of the outgroup. However, this is of no consequence to those around them. They isolated themselves and became the outcasts they so proclaimed as victims
