AntigoneThis tragedy by Sophocles seemed to touch many readers. This tragedy has caused many people in the present and ancient times to reconsider their purpose in life. This story was also intended to raise many questions. One question I'll talk about is: What means more to you, social acceptance or staying true to your beliefs? This classical tragedy I'm referring to is called Antigone. This fascinating story touches on many social and religious topics. I will discuss Antigone's tragic turmoil, her surrounding family, and the social and religious dilemma that Antigone faces that will ultimately decide her fate. Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. He also has a sister named Ismene and two brothers named Eteokles and Polynieces. Oedipus is also the son of Jocasta and the brother of the four brothers. The two sons, Eteokles and Polynieces, were in a rivalry for power. These two were heirs to the government of Thebes after the death of their father Oedipus. After fighting and killing each other for power, Oedipus' brother Creon became the next king of Thebes. Because Polynypos attacked Eteocles, Creon ordered that Eteocles be buried properly and that Polynypos not be given a proper burial ceremony. The play begins when Antigone and Ismene discover the news that Creon does not want Polynipus to be buried. Antigone intends to give her brother a proper burial. Ismene obeys Creon and wants nothing to do with what the king ordered. Kreon's messenger finds the buried body and hesitantly reports the news to Kreon. Shortly afterwards, his sentry captures Antigone in the act of burying her brother and takes her to the King to be punished. Antigone confronts the king and does not deny anything of what he has been accused of...... middle of paper ......ne, Kreon only made things worse. He was responsible not only for killing Antigone, but he was also responsible for the death of his son who loved Antigone and his wife, Eurydice, who loved her son. Creon lost everything he loved and became a lonely and helpless ruler. The only people Kreon had left were his guards, and they had no sympathy for him or his family. Today, many historical figures are celebrated for fighting for what they believe in. These people who did not obey the rules imposed by society are seen as heroes and respected for what they did for people in society long after their death. Antigone should be seen as a heroine because of what she represented. In ancient times there were not many women leaders. Antigone was certainly a figure to be considered revolutionary for women in ancient times and in today's society.
