Teaching Students with Special Needs The purpose of this article is to find and list websites that will help teachers teaching students with special needs. As more and more students with “special needs” enter the classroom, teachers need more and better information about teaching. The purpose of this document will be to allow teachers access to information about teaching these students in the field of geography. I am committed to creating a list that spans most grades and is useful to both new and experienced teachers. When teaching students with special needs, we must look for the best way to educate them to ensure they have the best education available. Below are just a few ways we can ensure students receive an appropriate education. General Guidelines The basic needs and geographic goals of the exceptional child are not that different from those of the “ordinary” child, but the means of achieving those goals and satisfying those needs may be different. The following general practices are crucial in teaching exceptional children.1. Maintain a positive attitude towards exceptional students. Special children require a lot of encouragement and understanding. Show that you are interested in them: talk to them about their geographical interests; the places they have been; be friendly and encouraging. Give the utmost consideration to the personal worth and mental health of each child and help each child in every way possible to develop personally, socially and academically. Consider learning styles and modes when planning instruction.
