Since the beginning of time parents have tried to figure out the most effective way to parent (Sears, 2003, p. 3). Just as parents have tried to identify the best method, so have scientists (Santrock, 2011, p.20); Scientists use theories to guide their understanding of things like how parenting and child development go together. Erik Erikson proposed the theory that children develop in psychosocial stages (Santrock, 2011, p.21). Erikson's theory contained 8 stages where he believed we are faced with a dilemma that needs to be addressed. The focus of this article is the very first psychosocial phase, which he proposes to experience in the first year of life (Santrock, 2011, p.21). Erikson's first psychosocial stage is the dilemma we face between trust and distrust (Santrock, 2011, p. 21). This stage is very important because it occurs in the first 12 months of the child's life and plays a role in shaping the rest of his or her life (Santrock, 2011, p. 21). According to Santrock (2011), Erikson's theory proposes that this stage is where the child determines whether or not the world is a place he or she will enjoy residing (p.22). The child determines whether or not the world is based only on the experiences he or she has during this early psychosocial stage (Santrock, 2011, p. 22). When a child is born, the first people he comes into contact with, besides doctors, are his parents; it is the parents' job to understand what measures to take to make the child feel well (Sears, 2003, p. 4). According to Sears (2003), believe that the most effective way to create a happy and healthy relationship between mother and child is through attachment parenting style (p. 3). The most important goals of the attachment parenting style are to help the parent gain a better understanding of the child, help the child feel loved and secure, and ensure that
