One of the sectors most impacted is the seafood industry. Seafood products are prevalent in pet foods and human diets. Given such high demand from the seafood industry, researchers suggest a more “judicious” approach to using “limited biological raw materials” such as seafood (De Silva & Turchini, 2008). The unique challenge of the pet food industry is that “pet food professionals must not only consider the total amount of protein to be achieved, but also the quality, bioavailability and even the source of the ingredients” when designing their formulas (Swanson, Carter, Yount, Aretz, & Buff, 2013).
