Will history forgive Richard Nixon? Nixon's death caused a great scandal; being the only US president forced to resign from office, he attracted the attention of many people. Richard M. Nixon died in April 1994 at the age of 81. He was born in California and was also the second child of five children. His family moved to Whittier, California, Nixon was nine years old and thanks to his mother he became really good at politics and debate. During his school years he ended up earning a tuition scholarship to Duke University Law School and also graduated third in his class in 1937. Finally, after graduating from Duke University, he returned to Whittier, where he worked in an old firm legal for several years. Nixon wanted something bigger than that old law firm, but World War II interfered and he ended up working in tired distribution for the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C. before actually taking part in the war as a Navy lieutenant. Before his active duty ended, Republicans began asking him if he could run for a seat in California's 12th congressional district in the House of Representatives. In 1930, Republicans gained control of Congress for the first time. Joan Hoff-Wilson believes that history will not forgive Nixon for several reasons. Nixon became president of the United States at a time of challenging crisis. After the war there was agreement on two things; which were: the efficiency of the domestic policies of the New Deal and the demands of the foreign policies of the Cold War. In the 1960s these two things started to break down and cause damage. In 1968, Richard Nixon held the highest office in the country. Nixon was different, he was a risk taker and because of this he was careless... middle of paper... of the executive branch of government and also attempted to reorganize the federal bureaucracy. This is what Professor Joan Hoff-Wilson believes and holds true regarding Nixon. When he was president, welfare grew, programs were successfully carried out and segregation decreased, lowering the percentage of black-only schools from 68% to 8%. Hoff-Wilson gave specific examples of what Nixon did. On the other hand Professor Kutler focuses on the bad things Nixon did. Even though Nixon abused his presidential power, he managed to find ways to help people. Kutler's focal point was the negative side of Nixon's personality and his corruption. All this was known thanks to Haldeman's diaries. Ultimately Nixon was a president of the United States, no two presidents are the same and they make different mistakes, but many have done great things for this country.
