Many people undress in the privacy of their own home. Whether for reasons of hygiene, sexual intercourse, or simply personal convenience, this is considered casual nudity. There are some people who feel comfortable undressing around other people as a lifestyle choice. Social nudism can be practiced in someone else's home, with friends, at social events, or simply in public. Many social nudists attend community events, resorts, or different clubs that promote a free-spirited lifestyle. The growing trend of nudism in America in the early 1900s had a major impact on where the culture could be practiced. Many nudists began to tire of only being able to practice their lifestyle in private and aimed to become more mainstream. Due to the limitations of traditional places to practice, the creation of nudist organizations in America has allowed nudists to enjoy themselves in public without breaking anti-nudity laws. The creation of these types of organizations liberated nudists and allowed the culture to grow aiming to make it mainstream in America. In the late 1800s in Germany, nudism was known as a free body culture. When it reached America's shores in the 1900s via German immigrants, the subculture's foundations promoted nonsexual social nudity, outdoor exercise, and a spiritual connection to nature. In the book entitled Social Nudism In America, it talks about social nudism and the vision of society, “social nudism is considered rational, deviant, rivalrous” (Ilfeld 1). Although free practice was widely accepted in European culture, it slowly became accepted in the United States.
