Journalism has proven to be an invaluable tool in the fight to reveal the hidden secrets of Watergate. One newspaper in particular, the Washington Post, brought to light important and necessary information about the people involved in Watergate. Two young journalists working for the Washington Post, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, were assigned to the Watergate case (Kilian 28). The efforts of these two men provided significant guidance to the investigation of the scandal. The two spent much of their time working on the cases and were able to uncover a financial connection between the thieves and Nixon's re-election committee (Kilian 28). They also interviewed members of Nixon's reelection committee who wanted to talk. Bob Woodward was able to obtain substantial information about the scandal through a secret source working in the Nixon administration. The man was called “Deep Throat” (Kilian 30). The two exchanged information at night in an underground garage. Deep Throat warned that the White House was getting angry over the Washington Post stories and that journalists' phones could be tapped (Kilian 30). The evidence provided by Deep Throat helped journalists gain the upper hand in the investigation. The work of Bernstein and Woodward has inspired many young and aspiring journalists. Thanks to their work, the Washington Post became immensely popular and became a significant rival to the New York Times (Collette). The impact of the work made many believe that journalism could truly make a difference in the world. Many Americans began making careers in journalism, and the United States saw a rise in investigative journalism (Collette). As trust in political officials began to wane, many Americans turned to the news… to the news media… to the New York Times. Np, June 5, 2005. Web. February 26, 2014.
