Millions of people have died due to genocides. Some may or may not know that Syria is going through a massacre right now. Syria is going through a civil war, which is why this conflict started. Genocide is an important topic because it allows people to learn that other people in different places do not have an easy life like theirs. The conflict in Syria is important to talk about because the problem emerged from a civil war unlike most genocide problems arising from wars. The mass killings in Syria should not be considered genocide. Before the government began wiping out the Sunnis, Syria began a civil war. This triggered the reason why the government started killing Sunnis. They are killing Sunnis because the government believes that Sunnis will take control of the Assad family, which would mean the end of Alawite rule (Simone 1). According to Chip, the Assad regime was producing chemical weapons to fight the civil war, and once it decided to eliminate the Sunnis, it began using these weapons against them. Since 2013, approximately 110,000 people have died in mass killings, leading people to believe it was genocide (Amr 1). The conflict in Syria should not be considered genocide because the government is killing Sunnis in a civil war. As Chip stated, it was during the civil war that they started killing Sunnis, so it can be assumed that the government has a legitimate reason to kill them. The sources do not say this specifically, but one can also assume that the Sunnis were hindering the Alawites, so they would have to kill them to win the war. If this were later declared true, it would defy the definition of genocide, because they are killing them for the sake of war, so… halfway through the document… they would have to petition to help many places that are experiencing mass killings. to help stop them. You might think they are useless, but that person could help save many lives. Works Cited Adams, Simon. “The world's next genocide.” The New York Times. The New York Times, November 15, 2012. Web.
