The time, 1941, the location, the then Soviet Union, the Red Army is retreating from German forces, closely following the German front line there it is an unspeakable force that is coming upon the conquered lands like a deadly plague. The Einsatzgruppen were regarded by their victims as mobile death dealers. The main occupation of the Einsatzgruppen was the humiliation, extermination and complete annihilation of Jews, Roma or Gypsies, members of the Communist Party and intellectsia or great thinkers. They were organized to be the most efficient at occupying and killing undesirables. The leaders of these war hounds were personally selected by Heydrich Himmler from among the brightest, bravest and most loyal Nazi members. The Einsatzgruppen were split up to cover more areas and cause more chaos. Their killing techniques were horrific and in some cases could even tax the executioner's mind. They were responsible for most of the murders of Jews during World War II. Almost all the large slaughter sites where they were located killed undesirables. The Einsatzgruppen were called into service in 1941 to liberate the conquered lands of the Soviet Union from Jews, Roma and everyone else. who the Nazis thought would be a problem. The Einsatzgruppen were used to humiliate and kill Eastern European undesirables. (Edeiken) The Einsatzgruppen also served as the criminal police in the ghettos where Jews were marginalized. Even in the ghettos the Einsatzgruppen carried out random shootings in the middle of the streets. The Einsatzgruppen were also tasked with protecting some Jews who possessed skills useful to the Nazis such as dentists, doctors and mechanics. (The Einsatzgruppen) The Einsatzgruppen also profited from the executions of t...... middle of paper ......and other undesirables including women and children. They killed mostly by shooting, but their leader thought it was too much for the men to handle, so they started using gas vans. Works Cited Berenbaum, Michael. Witness to the Holocaust p.112-113.
