Paul is the only white character in the novel who truly understands the difficulty of being black in the South. We first met Paul in Bayonne Prison, as he was escorting Grant to Jefferson Prison's cell. After Grant continually visits Jefferson, he and Paul grow closer. In Ed Piacentino's paper he notes that Grant and Paul were becoming better known. Piacentino saw the segregationist and oppressive attitude of the white community as an individual and not a global fact. He made an interesting comment about Paolo in his article “Paolo's eyes serve as a window into the essential goodness of his character” (Piacentino 5). At the end of the novel Paul sees Jefferson as a human being when he notices the remarkable transformation Jefferson has undergone. Paul knowing that Jefferson will be executed soon treats him with kindness wanting to leave Jefferson with a good memory of
