American Education System vs. Asian Education SystemToday the American education system is no longer the best in the world. With declining test scores and poor academic achievement, people are wondering if our current education system is working for us. On the other side of the Pacific the situation is totally different. Students in Asian countries achieve higher academic results and rank high on math and science tests. If their education system is better than the US, should we adopt it or not? America is the land of opportunity, famous for its democratic society and unique culture. People in America like to be free, to do what they want without any restrictions. This belief is reflected in the American education system. In American schools, teachers and students are on the same social level. Students are encouraged to exchange their opinions with the teacher. From an early age, students in the American education system are taught that they have the ability to achieve whatever they want to be, but they are rarely told how they can achieve their goal. This is because in America there are many ways to make your dreams come true. Because of this belief in innate natural abilities in the land of opportunity, students receive very little pressure in school, so whatever they do in school is totally based on their personal beliefs. If a student wants to be successful, he can study very hard and get into a great university. On the other hand, if a student has no self-control and just wants to finish school, that's okay too, because no one cares. The advantage of this type of education system is that it really develops the individual thinking skills of students, who are encouraged to try different options to achieve their goal. For example, Bill Gates, a college dropout, founded his own company, is now one of the richest men in the world. The bad thing about this system is that not many students have no responsibility to get good grades or be successful, many believe that even if you don't have a good education you can still get a well paying job. This is why many students achieve poor academic results at school. In Asian countries, the cultures and social standards are totally different from those in the United States. In these countries most of their values are based on Confucius, who strongly emphasizes education and group values. One's social status is based on one's level of education.
