1. Provide a brief introduction about the city and why you chose it. The city I chose was Las Vegas, NV, ranked 298 on the Building Resilient Regions website. The Spanish called this huge valley filled with wild grass and minerals "The Meadows" which later translated to Las Vegas. Now, Las Vegas is very different from American cities because it is famous for luxury casinos and entertainment. It has the title of "Entertainment Capital of the World" and is very prosperous in cultivating a diversified economy. I chose this city because it is a city that truly never sleeps and always has some kind of resource coming in or going out. Another reason why I chose Las Vegas is because it is one of the strongest economic cities in the United States and it certainly requires a lot of resources to fuel this city that never stops. I was very interested in doing research to understand why Las Vegas was not resilient and what could be improved.2. Which, if anything, makes this city vulnerable to climate change and peak oil concerns. Las Vegas is very vulnerable to climate change due to its location. Las Vegas is a flat desert and is already in terrible water scarcity. With severe climate change, all of Las Vegas would be vulnerable. Tourism, health and environmental impacts, and water supplies will all be extremely sensitive. Climate change could lead to even greater drought. Peak oil is also another big concern because Nevada has no oil refineries. All the fuel comes from a California pipeline, where the oil is processed into various grades. If the price of oil increased in California, it would almost double the price in Las Vegas because it has only one source. This alone could ruin the economy……middle of paper……g. The most important thing is to finance education. We have to start from the basis of things and the education is there. With funding for future generations it is possible to create a more effective resilience plan because people have the knowledge to do it. For example we can take the infamous fires occurring on Mount Charleston about an hour from Las Vegas. It is full of green pine trees which are also very dangerous and very flammable. With more education we can have the knowledge to prevent fires, train more people to manage them, or even create a more effective plane that releases chemicals to put out the fire. At the moment the only thing Las Vegas does is tell the pilot the coordinates of the fire and then drop the chemicals there. We can create a more effective plan that would improve aircraft transportation along with communication between the pilot and firefighters.
