Topic > Technology Reflection Paper - 1099

When I first signed up for Technology and Society, I honestly didn't know what to think of this course. I thought I would feel awkward because maybe it would be a class full of nerds, which it wasn't, and all we would talk about were different types of inventions and how they affected society. After completing the course, that was pretty much true, the class discussed many inventions and how they have affected society over the years, even how society has affected technology. One of the main topics covered during the lesson was the many different definitions of what was considered technology. The biggest lesson that was taught was how technology and society have been closely linked throughout history, and nowadays you can't have one without the other. According to the online Merriam-Webster Dictionary, technology means: the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or solve problems: a machine, a piece of equipment, a method, etc. created by technology. So the question is: how did this lesson affect me? I learned that the evolution of technology has radically changed society. Countless numbers of people around the world use and benefit from modern technology, and the enormous opportunities it offers play a significant role in almost every field of human life. Technology has simplified access to many necessary tools that people need in education, industry, medicine, communication, transportation, and so on. However, the excessive use of technology also has its disadvantages. Although, in most cases, the speed at which tasks are performed accelerates with the help of technology, many people do not realize that technology negatively affects society and that its considerable... the development of technology can lead to global environmental problems. To summarize, people can see many positive effects of technology on different aspects of human life such as education, personal security, agriculture, and the environment; However, not everyone thinks about its disadvantages. Although modern technology indeed facilitates people's tasks and duties, it can weaken human bodies, ruin nature and destroy good values regarding social communication. I believe in technology, I support it completely, but only up to a certain point. I say go ahead and enjoy what technology has to offer, learn about the world we live in, have fun and consume in it. Only as long as it doesn't affect your appearance or the people around you and especially the person in you. Think of it this way: we, as human machines, cannot let machines make us who we are.
