Marijuana, one of the most controversial drugs in America today, dates back to the 17th century. Today, according to most people, it is considered one of the most popular and sought-after drugs in the world. The only problem here is that it is illegal in the United States of America, which has led to numerous social, economic, and political issues. An example of these problems would be states going against the federal government and legalizing marijuana within state borders. Which leads to the main point: Marijuana should be legal for medical use in hospitals and for recreational use in daily life for economic purposes. Marijuana has been used as an agent to achieve euphoria since ancient times. The main purposes were prescribed for various conditions including labor pain, nausea and rheumatism. It was also used as an intoxicant and was also common from the 1850s to the 1930s. Today it is considered a gateway drug, meaning it is used to connect you to other drugs. The other uses were mainly pure consumption. Marijuana has spread across the nation, becoming one of the most commonly used drugs in the world today. The 60s and 70s used this drug as a symbol of the "hippie" generation and of disobedience for users. In these years they also called this drug a Schedule I drug. It was called that because it had the highest potential for abuse and no medical use for its purposes. With the advent of the 1990s, the drug declined considerably, being used mainly by teenagers. Marijuana can be used primarily for only two purposes: recreational use and for medicinal purposes. For medicinal purposes marijuana is used to treat the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy and other conditions. Overall, legalizing marijuana has many pros and cons, but through the research conducted it appears that there are more positive benefits that outweigh the negatives, therefore marijuana should be legalized. The drug's current legal status in the states of Colorado and Washington will likely be used as a testing ground by the government to see how things go and how the situation should be handled.
