On February 15, 2013, a meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia. According to Western scientists, it caused one of the largest explosions of its kind. Glass and flying debris caused most of the injuries from the meteorite impact. The shock wave violently shook the city of Chelyabinsk. Coincidentally, it happened on the same day that astronomers were watching another large rock pass Earth by just 17,200 miles. As it turns out, Earth being hit by meteorites isn't that unusual. The meteor was most likely made of stony materials and not solid metal. The meteor exploded 12-15 miles above the Earth's surface due to increased pressure. Experts estimated that it released an energy of between 300,000 and 500,000 tons of TNT. By way of comparison, the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima during World War II was equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT. Experts said that "this is the largest event recorded since the 1908 Tunguska event." This accident not only damaged buildings, but also created financial problems for the Russian government.
