The choices people make lead them to where they end up, which can be interpreted as the opposite of fate. However, when some people believe that something is meant to be, they are determined not to stray from where they think they should end up, even if it means throwing away their own principles and values in the process. Through Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth's original character and values are destroyed due to the influence of the witches' prophecies, Lady Macbeth's greed, and his own hidden ambition. Macbeth begins to differ from his original character when he learns of the witches' prophecies, which leads him to believe that he is destined to become king and to pursue that "destiny". After the witches make the prophecies, he simply sees the thought of himself becoming king as something "not within the scope of faith" (I. iii. 77). Macbeth's disbelief regarding their claim that he would get the crown reveals how Macbeth does not trust the witches' words and has no real ambition to become king. However, soon after Banquo and Macbeth's meeting with the witches, a messenger from the king greets him with the title Thane of Cawdor and with the title Thane of Glamis as the witches had also done. These two titles are seen by Macbeth as "Two truths [that] are told / As happy prologues to the rising act / Of the imperial theme" (I. iii. 140-142). Having either prophecy come true validates the witches' words and makes Macbeth take their words seriously as truth, triggering his desire for power to fulfill the last prophecy. Now he believes that what the witches did is his destiny, to become king, and it is his duty to fulfill it. Through the dialogue between Duncan and Macbeth, Macbeth learns about Malcolm b...... middle of paper ......d, he is apathetic towards his death. All he is worth is keeping his crown, and his greed for power leads to his brazenness in his final battle with Macduff. Because he does not believe that one of those born of woman can stop him, he neglects Macduff and when Macduff's story is revealed, Macbeth loses all faith and loses the battle and his life. Due to the witches' prophecies, Lady Macbeth's ambition, and Macbeth's life-long greed, Macbeth deviates from his values and principles, corrupting him and ultimately leading to his downfall. Because of their greed and pride, the characters in the Tragedy of Macbeth end up losing not only everything that was important to them, but also the life path they had tried so hard to stay on. Greed and pride shatter one's intended destiny, whether destiny is defined as where one would like to end up, or where one will end up..
