The term "haute couture" is French. Haute means "high" or "elegant". Couture literally means "sewing," but has come to mean the business of designing, creating and selling high-fashion bespoke women's clothing. There are strict rules to being part of a couture house. All designers must belong to the Paris Haute Couture Mayoral Chamber which is home to around 18 members including Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Valentino. Haute Couture designers must present their collections twice a year. These collections are exhibited only in Paris. Haute Couture designs are made from scratch and made specifically to fit the customer's measurements. Typically, these projects can take 100 to 400 hours to complete and can cost up to $100,000.
