The term "haute couture" is French. Haute means "high" or "elegant". Couture literally means "sewing," but has come to mean the business of designing, creating and selling high-fashion bespoke women's clothing. There are strict rules to being part of a couture house. All designers must belong to the Paris Haute Couture Mayoral Chamber which is home to around 18 members including Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Valentino. Haute Couture designers must present their collections twice a year. These collections are exhibited only in Paris.
