Topic > Jim Braddock and the Great Depression - 1165

Franklin Roosevelt said, "When you come to the end of the rope, tie a knot and hold on tight," and it relates directly to the Great Depression. People thought that because of this huge recession they would not survive, but they had to “tie a knot in the rope” and keep trying to survive. The Great Depression was a time of horror and failure. The giant stock market crashes of the 1930s triggered this blow to the nation's economy. This great devastation also drives many families into terrible poverty. In the movie Cinderella Man, the main character Jim Braddock experienced a lot of devastating events in his family during this time. Jim is easy to relate to, and in the film we see what his life was like during that time, like that of many other average Americans during the Depression. While America has not had another economic disaster like the Great Depression, the year 2010 has many similarities to the 1930s and if we don't start trying to change the economy, we will soon have a world of economic disaster as well. The stock market crash had a colossal contribution to the Great Depression. The stock market crash occurred after the heyday of the 1920s; with it came the Great Depression right behind it. The stock market crash was caused by people investing in stocks with money they didn't have, this was called margin buying. When stocks crashed, everyone lost a huge amount of money they had invested in stocks. The stock market was the primary cause that forced Americans into the Great Depression. The stock took a huge hit until it crashed; the crash forced many Americans into poverty because they had to sell almost everything they had to pay off... middle of paper... more poverty. Depression has affected millions of Americans and I really got to feel what they went through by watching the movie Cinderella Man. Jim Braddock, the main character in the movie, went through some tough times; he lost his job, couldn't support his family, and witnessed the loss of loved ones to the Great Depression. Going through all of this made him a stronger man. This gigantic mess was created because of the stock market crash of the 1930s. This was a time when the huge stock market crashed to the ground. The accident hurt so many American families, including Braddock. Even though the Great Depression ended some time ago, there are similar things that happened during the Great Depression that are happening in 2010. The Great Depression ruined many people, America needs to learn from its mistakes and make sure that a ruin like this doesn't never happen again.
