Current Cholera Research and Efforts Around the World As mentioned, cholera is present in developing countries, it is especially rampant in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. The main cause of the cholera epidemic in developing countries is due to unclean and infected water sources. We can see cholera spreading in disaster and refugee settings where people are crammed into tight spaces and unsanitary conditions. A study conducted by WHO in India revealed epidemic conditions of cholera epidemics. These are mostly seasonal epidemics, most cases go unreported and appear to go unrecorded. Results Of the 35 states or union territories of India, 21 reported cases of cholera during at least one year between 1997 and 2006. The state of West Bengal reported cases during all 10 years, while the state of Maharashtra and the territory of Delhi union reported cases during nine and Orissa during seven. There have been 68 outbreaks in 18 states and a total of 222,038 cases have been detected. This figure is approximately six times higher than the number reported to WHO (37,783) in the same period. The states of Orissa, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam and Chhattisgarh account for 91% of all cases linked to the epidemic. India has problems with wastewater management, food and water security are not monitored.1. Kanungo S, Sah B, Nair G, et al. Cholera in India: A Report Analysis, 1997-2006. WHO Bulin.
