One of the fun things about returning to campus after a break from school is noticing all the changes that have occurred. This semester, one of the most noticeable changes to the look of campus is the addition of smoke-free zones defined by blue borders. The first question that came to mind was: why? On paper it certainly sounds like a great idea. Installing smoke-free zones in front of building doors would allow the non-smoking population to walk through a cloud of smoke every time they want to go to class. Secondhand smoking has been defeated and everyone is happy, right? The fact is that the lines painted on the ground do nothing to stop the smoke from wafting towards any door. Just last week I was entering a building and passed someone smoking in an entryway with no smoking area. The time it took me to greet him as I entered was long enough for the smell of smoke to waft through the building.
