IntroductionYou may be wondering what exactly is an optometrist and what does he do? Optometrists are doctors who provide eye care. In their work they examine patients' eyes to determine if there are problems such as hyperopia. As a treatment they may prescribe glasses/contacts or other treatments such as vision therapy or low vision rehabilitation. (bls.gov)HistoryCurrently, 168.5 million US citizens use glasses or contact lenses, which means that 75% of the US adult population has been seen by an optometrist (topoptometricschool.com). This is a large number of people who have been involved with the business of optometry in some way. Before we dive into the vast history of optometry, it's important to understand exactly where it originated. The word optometry comes from the Greek language. Opto meaning sight and metron meaning measure are the two Greek words from which it originates. (topoptometricschool.com) Many ancient Greek philosophers such as Ptolemy, Euclid, and Aristophanes wrote about using some sort of extremely simplified version of vision enhancement, but it was not very practical in use at all (Goss, David A). actually not until the late 13th and early 14th centuries until the vision spell actually came into practical use. Bacon talked about goal, but never implemented a plan. It is not known who made the first lens, but the business of producing glasses began in the 1300s in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands using leather and wood. From there, the laws and physics of vision magnification were theorized and discovered by some scientists such as Snell with his law of refraction and Newton with his study of how light works.
