Societies' Judgment of Limited English Proficiency Society judges civilians based on appearance, social status, class, and many other ways. One way society judges civilians is by criticizing the way they speak or write. This judgment has consequences for individuals who have not mastered the English language, such as limited opportunities and being socially awkward. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan talks about the difficulties of speaking “broken” English, which consequently leads to judgment. Individuals are sometimes judged on their writing skills. The abilities of some individuals are not as developed as those of others for many different reasons. In high school, a student whose English skills are underdeveloped can have his or her paper peer reviewed and will be laughed at because of flaws in sentence structure. Students may criticize that specific student whose sentence structure is wrong, as illiterate and somehow inferior to others. Furthermore, test scores influence the student's image of how he/she perceives himself/herself. On the other hand, due to limited English skills, characters may be bullied or bullied because they perceive themselves as limited or inferior, hence the influence of society on the population. In "Mother Tongue", Amy Tan states: "...answers on English tests have always been a judgement, a matter of opinion..." In this quote Amy explains how she understands that test scores do not measure her true potential. only by the writing skills that society judges of a population, but also by how well an individual speaks. Society will quickly make judgments about illiteracy and sometimes even more crass comments such as "retarded" or "idiot" if an individual's speech is not up to par. Furthermore, the individual often uses stereotypical remarks such as: “I... in the middle of the paper... find conversations only because he/she forms sentences incorrectly. Some individuals who speak with broken English can actually understand much more than some might think, so broken English does not make an individual less human. Therefore, having limited English skills in speaking or writing can result in short or long English. long-term effect on an individual's self-esteem and opportunities. Judgment should not be made, nor should one's worth or potential be judged based on test scores or stereotypical sayings. Society plays an important role in what today's citizens think of each other. Therefore, it is up to society to educate individuals who judge those who have limited English skills. Individuals with limited and temporary abilities to speak or write should not measure the individual's potential in life or limit his or her opportunities.
