To choose for their children, the wealthy class of the world will soon have options such as tall, pretty, athletic, intelligent, blue eyes and blonde hair. Sometimes described as similar to “Hitler's Third Reich eugenics” (“Designer Babies” n.p.), new genetic technology is causing differences in people's opinions, even though altering DNA before implantation is “just behind the corner". (Thadani np). A recent advance in genetically altering embryos, called “custom-made babies,” produces controversy over the morality of this process. After the discovery of genetically altering an embryo before implantation, the term “custom-made children” was coined to describe a child genetically modified “to ensure specific intellectual abilities and aesthetic characteristics.” (“Designer Babies” np). This procedure combines genetic engineering and in vitro fertilization (IVF) to ensure that certain characteristics are absent or present in an embryo (Thadani np). The procedure also involves harvesting an embryo for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), another procedure used by doctors to screen embryos (Stock np). An embryo's DNA is subjected to multiple tests to obtain an embryo analysis, which will list all the components of the embryo including genetic disorders and physical traits such as Down syndrome, blue eyes and brown hair, for example ( Smith 7). Although the use of PGD is widely accepted by the “reproductive medicine community” and the modification of disorders or diseases is to some extent, once the characteristics are no longer health-related “72% disapprove of the procedure” (“ Designer Babies” np). At this point parents make decisions that will change their children's lives forever and this decision is quite controversial in the U... Viewpoints in context. Web. May 4, 2014. "Designer Babies."
