Canada is a country that has overcome countless obstacles and difficult challenges on its journey to becoming the nation it is today. However, the historical path has not been entirely negative, indeed there have been truly memorable experiences during the 20th century specifically; one of them was the Roaring '20s, where countries' economies prospered and people could now afford items they normally would not have been able to afford. This caused a period of innovators, with consumers demanding new products to replace various tasks or accomplish something unheard of; this was their moment. Additionally, the large amounts of money earned made it much easier for researchers to receive funding, and results were achieved at a much faster pace. The 1920s were a prosperous decade, full of successful innovations that transformed history for the better. Of all the inventions of the Roaring '20s, the three most significant are insulin, automobiles, and the radio. One of the greatest medical milestones in history discovered in the 1920s was insulin. Nowadays diabetes is commonly known as a relatively harmless condition, however before insulin was discovered, it was lethal. Insulin is a substance that the pancreas produces to break down food, this affects blood glucose levels (Wikispaces.com). Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce the necessary amount on its own, thus accumulating glucose in the blood (Wikispaces). Some symptoms caused by diabetes are nerve damage, blurred vision, and muscle cramps (Wikispaces.com). In 1922, Frederick Banting and his research assistant Charles Best isolated insulin and successfully lowered a dog's blood sugar (glucose) level (About.com).
