What's so fascinating about fictional stories? Is it the many anomalous events that can occur throughout history? In the story Monstro by Junot Diaz he focuses on fiction to write his story. In this fictional story he shows us how the country of Haiti is affected by an anomalous disease. The name of the disease as people have decided to call it is La Negrura (The Darkness), this disease causes the infected to turn into zombie-like creatures. As the story developed and he realized that the story was science fiction, Junot Diaz decided to use some literary elements to give his story a sense of social realism. With the help of literary elements such as imagery, Junot Diaz in his fictional story Monstro is able to create a sense of social realism. Images are a literary element that is developed through detailed writing, this element was used by Diaz to give his fictional story a sense of social realism. Images are developed through detailed writing, in images you immerse the reader in their imagination and create in their mind and image of what you are telling them in the text. In the narrative story Diaz uses images to give his story a sense of social realism: “In the Democratic Republic of the Congo we heard about the uprising. I saw horrible videos of people being chased and massacred” (p. 9). In this quote Junot gives us details on how people are chased and not only killed instantly by the infected, but decide to massacre them. From the details it presents we immediately begin to imagine how the infected were killing people. This fictional event gives the story a sense of social realism because if this event had actually happened every human being around the world would see the videos which give a sense of… of social realism. Saying that thirty-two planes fell from the sky due to the detonation of a bomb shows us that in reality this cannot currently happen, it gives the reader a sense of social realism.
