Story SummaryThe story The Crimson Flame by Franklin W. Dixon begins with Frank and Joe Hardy in a New York City subway station. They see a man in Western dress being followed and begin to investigate out of curiosity. After following the two for a while, the second man jumps on the man dressed in a western suit. The boys fight the second man and help the western man. He introduces himself as Alfred McVay, a rancher from Arizona. He explains that he had just purchased a giant ruby called Crimson Flame at a jewelry auction. This immediately arouses the suspicions of the Hardy brothers, who alert a nearby policeman to the incident and the description of the attacker. The policeman recognizes the attacker from the description as Oscar Tamm, a known jewel thief. Furthermore, McVay discovers that the secret pocket where he placed the ruby was slightly open. That means the thief knew about the pocket, but Mr. McVay says only he and a few close friends knew about the pocket. After this, Frank and Joe offer to go with him to Mr. McVay's hotel for protection. Upon arriving at the hotel, Mr. McVay is again attacked by Tamm. He was very scared now. Frank and Joe, sensing something was wrong, also drove McVay to the airport and gave him their phone numbers. It went well and the Hardy boys went home. That night, however, Mr. McVay calls again, saying that strange things were happening at the ranch and that the boys should come and investigate. Frank and Joe agree to be on the midnight flight to Arizona. Mr. McVay says they could pretend to be new cowhands so as not to arouse suspicion, and the boys agree. Upon arrival, they are greeted by Wat Perkins, McVay's team leader. His truck appears to be having trouble starting and leaves... half the paper... the second ruby was found. One of the miners showed the three the ruby, but then Tamm runs in, knocks them all out, and takes the ruby! Frank and Joe then get up and begin chasing him through the jungle, eventually arriving at an abandoned temple. They look inside the temple, but Tamm isn't there, so they decide to search the entire temple. Tamm and Summers with some sinister Thais see them and trap the boys in the temple. The Hardys are forced down into a hole under a throne in the temple. There is a cobra in the hole, but it leaves the boys alone. Frank then gets the idea that since the snake could enter; there's probably a way out. There is, and the boys return to the jungle. In the jungle, they see a plane used by criminals and bent the propellers so that the plane was disabled. Frank and Joe then return to To Kor and find Bo Dai there.
