Sex is usually a source of pleasure, but it is not without dangers. Discuss some of the ways in which hegemonic constructions of sexuality and expressions of sexual desire can (and do) cause harm. Can we reduce or eliminate the damage done? Sex was an act done only to reproduce. The act was typically performed at night and in private. Sex was not something done for pleasure and was not talked about in public. (Obtained through discussions in Dr. Steele's lectures.) Over the years, society has changed its view of sex and where, when it is done and talked about. Sex-related things fill our media and live almost 100% of the time. In today's society, sex has become something pleasant while in the past it was not. Even though sex is something pleasurable, it brings with it negative effects that can cause harm to someone and/or a group of people. There are so many types of negative effects that sex can bring. The negative effects that sex can have on a person or a group can be physical and/or mental. For example, the idea of “a virginity” has brought a lot of fear or guilt when someone loses their “virginity.” Previously it was thought that virginity was something sacred. Now that sex is an open topic and people talk about it openly and participate in the act, virginity has lost the idea of being sacred. Even though losing one's virginity has become more relaxed, that doesn't mean it doesn't make some feel afraid or guilty about losing it. When some lose their virginity, they sometimes think it was a mistake and sometimes it is taken from them through rape. This causes mental harm to the person or people and has created this new term “second virginity”. This is where you think you can regain your virginity in many ways... middle of paper... inside. In one case there was a female-owned peepshow business. The entertainer came from all different types of social classes. The entertainers controlled how they danced and who entertained. Even though they still showed off their body, they controlled the situation by making it seem less like they were being used. (Tawnya Dudash, Peepshow Feminism, pg230-240). While these industries provide entertainment to consumers and money to CEOs and actors, they leave a trail of negative effects on both actors and society outside of the industries. The negative effects they have are present and can obviously be seen, so why are they still in business? This is the million dollar question. It seems like everyone says that money doesn't talk, but with the evidence shown between these two industries and their negative effects, that money really does talk.
