If he had known perhaps things would have turned out differently and Claudius would have been kicked out by the monarch and the person who deserved it, his son Hamlet, would have received the highest place. Everyone in the Kingdom also looked for Claudius as a good king following his duties as a ruler. But even they didn't know what really happened. Ophelia, for example, drowned. Everyone thought that her son Hamlet had something to do with her death due to his outrageous and crazy acts, especially Claudius. All of this is just a way to get everyone on Claudio's good side and make it seem real. People believed in him but not in the right way, they were just lied to all the time. Another way that people sided with Claudius is that Laertes was so angry at his son Hamlet for the death of Polonius, Laertes' father.
