Good stories don't have to be written in the same time period or place to be compared. A great example of stories that can be compared that were not written in the same year are: A Rose for Emily” by William Fulkner and “The Pura Principle” by Junot Diaz. These stories had many similarities and differences. For example, they were both first-person narrative, they both revolve around sick characters, and at some point in the story they both had the same tone elements. "A Rose for Emily" is a short story by American author William Faulkner. This story is a first-person narrative or peripheral narrator, which means it is a first-person narrator who is not the main character. We can say that this narrative is called “first person” rather than “first person” because the narrator usually referred to himself as “we”. For example “We didn't say she was crazy then. We believed it had to. Similarly to the story "The Pura Principle" by Junot Diaz, also a first-person narrative, here the narrators make frequent use of the pronoun "I", talking about themselves and what happens around them. For example “My mother was controlled in her own way. It wore on: between my brother and the factory and taking care of the house (I didn't lift a finger in our apartment, male privilege, darling).” Diaz's narrative language and the way the story is told are decidedly different from Faulkner's. “The Principle of Pura” was told in a fast pace, jumping from one scene to another. Diaz uses slang words and writes in Spanglish throughout the story, as shown in the following quote “Rafa estaba jodido. At that point it was just me and Mami taking care of him and we didn't know what the fuck to do, that... middle of paper... that "the few times my kids at school tried to pick him up, I turned. I told them to mind their fucking business. That shows that it bothered him every time people asked him about the situation his family was going through with his brother Rafa for Emily" and "The Pura Principle" were two of many impressive stories that were not written in the same time period but we are able to find differences and similarities between these two stories. When stories are written in different periods and by different authors, we just need to read them carefully. Take note of the different tones used in the stories, the setting, the conflict, the language used by the narrator, and the way the narrator is involved in the story. Once you get this from both stories , the only thing left to do is compare them.
