OdysseyIn Homer's Odyssey the main character Odysseus is a person who only tries to help himself. Although he gains the trust of his men while in Troy, he loses it on the perilous journey home. Many times in the epic he manipulates others, commits foolish acts and is full of arrogance. He tries to take shortcuts and as a result men are killed and his boats destroyed. He plays with his men's lives and is punished for it. Odysseus is not a hero because he is foolish, lacks loyalty, and is consumed by his arrogance and selfishness. First, Odysseus is not a hero because he is a foolish leader who makes many mistakes on his journey home to Ithaca. His first mistake is the decision to let his men raid and plunder the kikones, this reckless decision gets thirty of his men killed and countless others injured, it also angers the Gods because it caused the death of many kikones and also many of his own soldiers. . Another crazy decision made by Odysseus is to explore the island of the Cyclops. Instead of just exploring his surroundings, Odysseus decides to explore the entire island, just so he can see a Kyklops. Once again this idiotic decision ends in the death of more of his loyal men. Finally, another foolish decision he makes is to leave Elpenor unburied, which tortures his soul. As a result, Odysseus is forced to return to the island of Kirke, wasting time and precious food in burying his body. This decision is not only selfish but disrespectful because it forces Elpenor to undergo extreme suffering in the painful underworld. Odysseus is a selfish leader who needed to stop and think about his decisions instead of acting on impulse, this could have saved the life of... middle of paper... he would have felt better than anyone else. Finally, Odysseus shows Hubris when he accepts the challenge of shooting the arrow through the twelve axes. This is an act of arrogance because it shows that he thinks he is better than everyone else. Odysseus is a selfish and proud man whose self-centered and selfish decisions get him into trouble and give him a bad reputation with the gods. Odysseus is not a hero because he is foolish, lacks loyalty, and is consumed by his arrogance and selfishness. Odysseus may be known as the first “modern hero,” but in my mind he is an impostor. He displays no heroic qualities in his adventures and survives only through luck and goodwill. He only starts praying because he is in trouble, if it weren't for this he would never have even recognized the role of the Gods in his journey home. Ulysses is not only not a hero but an impious man and a disloyal husband.
