Minimum WageThe time or no increase in the minimum wage is currently a hot topic. Some believe the minimum wage should be increased while others say it should not. The minimum wage is the lowest wage payable to employees. The minimum wage should not be increased because if it were too high, workers would be forced to leave their jobs and could lose everything. “The minimum wage makes it illegal for workers to have a job that pays less than the minimum wage, and prevents employers from hiring anyone for less than the legal minimum wage, even if people are willing to work for less. If the current minimum wage for low-skilled workers is $7.25 an hour, and Congress mandates a minimum wage of $9 an hour, workers earning less than that will not stay employed or get hired. In the long run, as businesses shift to labor-saving production methods, low-skilled jobs will become unnecessary. In anticipation of a $9 an hour minimum wage, small businesses are already planning to switch to automated equipment, self-service and new software to save money because low-skilled workers will have to be paid more. More jobs will be created for skilled workers, but jobs will be destroyed for low-skilled workers. Politicians promise workers $9 an hour, but this promise cannot be kept if employers fire or fail to hire low-skilled workers. More importantly, if low-skilled workers lose their jobs or cannot find minimum wage jobs, their effective income will be zero.” (James A. Dorn). Therefore, if the minimum wage were increased, the job market could be destroyed for those in the lower classes and the unskilled workforce. “The evidence shows that when the minimum wage is increased there will be fewer jobs and more unemployment, especially in the long run. If a person…half of paper…minimum, 73% of Americans support raising the minimum wage. It's time for Congress to act." (James A. Dorn). At first I thought that the minimum wage should have been left aside. However, thanks to the discovery of new evidence, I discovered that an increase in the minimum wage could significantly help the growth of the economy. If things stay the same, it could take years for things to improve. to tell the truth, no one will ever really know what will happen. America just needs to take a leap of faith and hope for the best. Should the minimum wage be increased? Yes, the minimum wage should be increased because recent evidence shows that by increasing the minimum wage the economy will grow faster and will benefit everyone in the long run.
