Just as the September 11 attacks left a tragic mark on American history, changing the course of its future in more ways than one, they have left the rest of the world in shock and dismay. The attack not only initiated America's involvement in the war against terrorism and affected its international relations, but also severely affected its people, creating prejudice against Arabs, Muslims and their ilk causing mass hatred, discrimination and racial profiling. The American media and popular culture have made this event the center of their attention countless times. At the same time, foreign media have been providing their own detached views on 9/11 and the objective of this article is to bring to light some of those views represented by Indian cinema or more popularly known as Bollywood, and to study its impact on Indian society. This article presents a detailed analysis of the film - New York, released in 2009 and directed by the famous Indian director Kabir Khan, which was the first Indian film, based on the September 11 attacks which occurred in New York City in 2001. This film divides time in a pre- and post-9/11 world, to clearly highlight the repercussions of the attacks and the changes they brought to society by depicting issues such as racial profiling, illegal detention, torture, national security, etc. The main argument supported by this fictional film is the irreversible damage caused by the prejudices that took over America after 9/11 and how suspects were detained based only on their race or appearance, for months and tortured despite all evidence. It is not the daily news, newspapers, books or magazines, but Indian cinema which has undoubtedly remained the...... middle of paper......Works Cited1. “HM announces measures to strengthen security” (Press release).
