Term paper: Bunyan's Progress of the Pilgrims John Bunyan, born 28 November 1628 to 31 August 1688, is known as an English Christian writer and orator. He is known for writing The Christian's Pilgrimage. Although Bunyan was a Reformed Baptist, he is remembered in the Church of England with a minor feast on 30 August. Bunyan was not well educated. He followed the path of his father who practiced as a tinker and also served in the Parliamentary Army from 1644 to 1647. He lived in Elstow until his wife's death. Bunyan then moved to England (Bedford), where he had remarried. In 1650, John became a successful deacon and began speaking or “preaching.” He continued to preach without a preacher's license, and the leading authorities turned their cheeks against him for a while, but then had to imprison him. In March 1675 he was imprisoned again for preaching publicly without a licence. This book is told like a dream. The author illustrates at the beginning of the book that he falls asleep in the desert and “dreamed” of Christian. In the book there is a "spiritual guide", his name Evangelist. The evangelist later visits Christian and encourages him to leave the City of Destruction. Eve also states that salvation will be found in the Celestial City, known as Mount Zion. The entire novel consists of several palaces, valleys and mountains. Christian begins in his city, the City of Destruction. He has a pretty huge burden on his back and the evangelist suggests that perhaps he should try asking God for salvation. Christian decides that this would be the way to go and leaves for the Celestial City, even though almost all of his friends and family try to change his mind. Bunyan emphasizes the power of the word, of God or otherwise, in the pilgrim's quest. First, the text is full of scriptural allusions, with which Bunyan's readers would have been very familiar. Biblical literacy is of primary importance to the Puritans, and the weight of the Scriptures cannot be underestimated. The words of Scripture are as powerful when verbalized as they are when read, and characters often quote Scripture to each other. They also speak out loud to comfort themselves and others, such as when Christian is in the Valley of the Shadow of Death (Page 77 ebooks). The pilgrims spend much of their pilgrimage time in conversations, and Bunyan uses these dialogues as an opportunity to communicate theology to his readers..
